<p><strong>DAYTON</strong> —<b> </b>The Greater Dayton Association of Black Journalists is accepting applications for its annual journalism boot camp and scholarship.</p>
<p>The daylong interactive boot camp will introduce students to careers in journalism. It’s aimed at <b>high school and college students, </b>and<b> </b>will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Saturday, April 20, in the Cox Media Center (Dayton Daily News), 1611 South Main St., Dayton.</p>
<p><b> Although the workshop</b> targets blacks, Asians, Hispanics and other minorities traditionally underrepresented in newsrooms, it is open to all races. GDABJ is committed to diversity and accepts all students.</p>
<p>The hands-on program is free of charge.</p>
<p>It’s run by area print, broadcast and digital journalists who use interactive exercises to turn students into journalists for a day.</p>
<p>During each session, students will take notes, ask questions, and at the end of the day, write stories and broadcast the news.</p>

<p>In addition to the boot camp, GDABJ is seeking candidates for the Derek Ali Memorial Fund Scholarship for students pursuing careers in journalism and related fields.</p>
<p>T<b>he Derek Ali Memorial Scholarship</b> honors our fallen friend and colleague, and his work to promote journalism as a career for Dayton Public School students.</p>
<p>Derek, a 20-year <i>Dayton Daily News</i> reporter, was adjunct adviser for the <i>Tiger Times</i>, the student newspaper at Stivers School for the Arts.</p>
<p>A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Dayton Public School senior who plans to pursue a career in journalism. This year’s winner may also be offered a paid <i>Dayton Daily News</i> internship.  The scholarship will be awarded based on instructors&#8217; comments and a review of the student&#8217;s submitted work by GDABJ members.</p>
<p>Applicants must reply by <b>May 1, 2013 </b>for consideration.</p>
